The Seizure and Epilepsy Foundation (SEF) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization committed to raising awareness, advocating for proper medical care, and supporting individuals and families affected by seizures and epilepsy across Nigeria and Africa.
Founded with the goal of breaking the silence, myths, and stigma surrounding epilepsy, SEF brings together medical professionals, caregivers, volunteers, educators, and survivors to educate communities, empower families, and provide life-saving support.
We recognize that in many parts of Africa, epilepsy is still misunderstood — often labeled with fear, shame, or spiritual misconceptions. At SEF, we believe knowledge is healing. Our work is rooted in compassion, evidence-based care, and a deep commitment to ensuring that no one living with epilepsy is left behind.
To support, educate, and advocate for individuals affected by seizures and epilepsy, while promoting access to diagnosis, treatment, and dignity — regardless of background or belief.
A Nigeria (and Africa) where epilepsy is no longer feared or hidden, but understood, treated, and supported — with equity, empathy, and action.
With more than 3.4 million people living with epilepsy nationwide, the impact of our work matters. With your help, we’ve made huge strides in epilepsy training, research, and advocacy.

Testimonials
Before I found this foundation, I thought epilepsy was a spiritual curse. My son Abdulrahman had his first seizure in school, and we were scared and confused. The team here taught us what epilepsy really is and how to manage it.
Ilorin, Kwara State.
I’ve lived with epilepsy since I was 16. I used to hide it because of stigma in my community. But through this foundation, I got connected with other people like me. I now have hope, confidence, and support I never imagined.
Enugu, Nigeria
When my daughter Aminat collapsed during a seizure, people said it was witchcraft. The hospital was far, and we didn’t know what to do. This foundation not only helped us with information but also gave us a direct link to real doctors.

While there is currently no universal cure for epilepsy, many people can live seizure-free with proper treatment. In some cases, individuals outgrow epilepsy or achieve long-term seizure control with medication, surgery, or lifestyle changes. The goal is always to reduce seizures and improve quality of life.
Stay calm and protect the person from injury. Gently roll them onto their side, cushion their head, and clear the area of sharp objects. Do not restrain them or put anything in their mouth. Call emergency services if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or if it’s their first seizure.
No, epilepsy is not contagious. It is a medical condition caused by brain activity disruptions. You cannot catch epilepsy from another person through touch, sharing food, or any other contact.
Yes! With the right support and treatment, many people with epilepsy lead full, active lives. They can go to school, work, start families, and participate in most activities. Managing epilepsy is about understanding triggers, following medical advice, and reducing stigma through awareness.
